    Barista Skills is a course for people focussing on the key skills required to further a career in the industry. As these modules progress, participants can expect to gain a deeper understanding of the coffee itself and build upon practical skills for milk technique and latte art, not to mention health and safety, customer service and basic business.

Foundation Level



    This one-day foundation course is designed for those who are new to the coffee industry, and requires no previous barista experience to participate. Completion of the Introduction to Coffee module is recommended (but not mandatory).
    Written and practical tests: 60% pass mark required.
    Successfully completing this course is worth 5 points towards your SCA Coffee Diploma.




    The course focuses on the key skills required as a barista:
  • The origin and history of coffee beans
  • Workspace management
  • Learning about grinding, dosing and tamping
  • Understanding extraction and brewing
  • An introduction to milk techniques
  • Creating a barista menu
  • The importance of hygiene, health and safety
  • Machine cleaning, maintenance and trouble-shooting

    All SCA training courses are held right here at the Extract roastery. With our purpose built training area, including classroom and practical spaces, participants will be able to learn first hand about the coffee journey and watch the roasting process in action.
