Barista Skills is a course for people focussing on the key skills required to further a career in the industry. As these modules progress, participants can expect to gain a deeper understanding of the coffee itself and build upon practical skills for milk technique and latte art, not to mention health and safety, customer service and basic business.

Intermediate Level

OVERVIEW:

This two-day intermediate course is suitable for those who have experience working as baristas. Participants can expect to gain a deeper understanding of coffee itself and builds upon the practical skills covered at the Foundation level.

Written and practical tests: 70% pass mark required.

Successfully completing this course is worth 10 points towards your SCA Coffee Diploma.

COURSE OUTLINE:

This course offers a comprehensive knowledge of the coffee industry as well as thorough training for developing as top baristas:

  • Coffee processing and roasting methods
  • Introduction to cupping (basic sensory skills)
  • Workspace management and efficiency
  • Understanding of grinding, machine maintenance and trouble-shooting
  • Dosing and tamping
  • Varying extraction, looking at EBF and ratio
  • Milk techniques (introduction to latte art
  • Creating a barista menu and handling multiple drinks orders
  • The importance of hygiene and health and safety compliance
  • Customer service
  • Basic business accounting and financial management

  • Intermediate course £400+VAT
  • SCA Intermediate certificate £80/£144 (SCA Member/non member)
  • 2 days 10am-5pm
  • All full day courses include a light lunch, please inform us in advance of any dietary requirements

All SCA training courses are held right here at the Extract roastery. With our purpose built training area, including classroom and practical spaces, participants will be able to learn first hand about the coffee journey and watch the roasting process in action.
