Red Grape, Lemon & Black Tea
In the cup: Red Grape, Lemon & Black Tea
The Burundi Gakenke comes from the Gakenke Washing Station in Northern Burundi. Here, volcanic soils and reliable rainfall help smallholders produce some outstanding coffees. The washing station was established in 1991, and uses water from the nearby Ruvubu river, one of the most distant tributaries of the Nile basin. The Kayanza Province is one of the more populated regions of Burundi, owing to the exceptional soil health, access to natural water sources and proximity to the Rwandan border.
Each of the micro plantations delivering to Gakenke represent around 300 shade grown coffee trees. The ripe cherries are then hand-picked before being transported to the wet mill where they are pulped, washed and dried. This coffee showcases the best flavours found in East African coffees; rounded red fruit sweetness, sparkling acidity and tea-like tannins.
