Mulling Spice, Baked Plum & Black Tea
In the cup: Mulling spice, baked plum & black tea
Huge investment into the coffee industry in Rwanda has seen production of speciality coffee soar. The Muhura washing station has sought further help from the Rwanda Trading Company (RTC) in order to provide working capital back in 2011, who have since purchased the station outright.
Now Muhura processes around 900 metric tonnes of cherry annually thanks to the upgrading of facilities. Most recently we are now seeing experimental lots, different processing methods, like this Muhura Natural, and more vibrant and consistent coffees than ever before.
Unlike the more prevalent washed coffees from Rwanda, this Natural lot was comprised of handpicked, sorted coffee cherries put straight out to dry on raised beds. The drying typically takes up to 30 days. The resulting coffee is vibrant and very, very sweet. Juicy baked plums, mulling spices and heady botanicals bring body, acidity and a complexity that is truly special.
