Buf Café was founded in 2003 by Epiphanie Mukashyaka. After losing her husband in the 1994 genocide, Epiphanie set about rebuilding and developing her business and community. Her business has since grown to three separate washing stations.

Often Buf Cafe Naturals are a blend of natural coffees from all three of Epiphanie’s washing stations, but this special lot was produced entirely at Umurage. Cherries are hand picked only when fully ripe from nearby smallholders – each with a farm of about 0.25 hectares and ranging from 1,750-2,100 metres above sea level. The coffee is brought to Umurage for collective processing where it is carefully sorted at every stage.

This exceptional lot is an amazing example of all that natural processing has to offer. After roasting it in Betty Espresso earlier this year, it is truly a dazzling as a single-origin filter with notes of sweet watermelon, pineapple and a spiky lime acidity.
