Grounds Up. Our charity collective

SUPPORTING OUR COMMUNITIES FROM THE GROUND UP

Twelve years ago we started roasting coffee. Our mission was simply to make coffee better.

Over time that evolved to making not just the quality of coffee better, but the making the business of coffee better for people and planet. We believe in generously sharing our knowledge and passion and doing what we can to support our friends, neighbours and communities.

This is the story of Grounds Up. A collective of grass-roots charity partners and projects based Extract's communities and supported by our people with time, and knowledge. Every coffee we roast supports these projects. By buying and drinking coffee roasted by Extract, you're supporting them too.

2016: WE MEET HOTEL SCHOOL

In 2016 we started working with Hotel School. A joint venture between The Goring Hotel and The Passage, London’s oldest homeless charity. to teach hospitality skills to ex rough sleepers and vulnerable adults.

2017: BARISTA TRAINING BEGINS

Working with Hotel School unearthed a passion in us. Throughout 2017 we take part in open days, deliver barista training and have the privilege of getting to know students and graduates from each of the cohorts.

Feeling empowered, we started looking at ways we could step up our support for Hotel School and also at our communities in Bristol and beyond.

2018: IT’S A KNOCKOUT

The opening of Extract London in Sustainable Bankside in 2018 meant we were able to offer work experience placements to our Hotel School students and graduates. It also saw Extract team members, Ben, Harrison, Ollie and Chris receive mentorship training and start mentoring Hotel School graduates.

In Bristol, we started working with Empire Fighting Chance, a boxing gym just 400 steps from the roastery which works with young people to raise aspiration and make better life choices.

We kicked off the partnership with a barista training session for the Empire Fighting Chance coaches, and an Extract box-fit session over at the gym.

We decided to rebrand our Strong Man Winter Espresso as Strong Man and Strong Woman, and made the choice to donate £1 per kilo to Hotel School and Empire Fighting Chance, raising £2000!

2019: GEN-Z BARISTAS

Barista training and mentorship has continued with Hotel School throughout 2019. Seeing graduates progress into barista roles has been amazing. We’ve spent time sharing this story with partners and customers to secure more job opportunities for Hotel School graduates at cafes, canteens and restaurants across London.

At the start of 2019, we teamed up with Empire Fighting Chance to deliver talks and careers workshops to local schools across Bristol sharing what we love about hospitality.

Together, we designed a bespoke barista training programme for 16-24 year olds to take place over the summer here at the roastery. We’ve been delighted to bring Boston Tea Party on board to support with interviews and work placements.

Plans are already underway for Strong Man / Strong Woman 2019 as we will look to further support these two incredible partnerships.
