SPECIALITY COFFEE BLENDS

Much like whiskey, single origin coffees are prized in the coffee industry, but blends are often overlooked. This is partly because large chain coffee shops are known to use cheaper, poorer quality coffee in some of their blends. These coffees offer limited traceability back to the grower.

Original is a blend with a difference. Extract Original blends three carefully chosen coffees from fantastic coffee producers.

The result? A consistently delicious tasting espresso, ethically sourced with 100% traceability from crop to cup. A favourite in homes, offices and cafes nationwide.

MEET THE GROWERS

Cauvery Peak

India isn’t yet well known for its speciality Arabica coffee but we’re hoping that our work with this incredible farm will help to introduce Indian speciality coffee to coffee drinkers who haven’t tried it before.

Cauvery Peak coffee estate has been in Mr Ramesh’s family for more than 70 years.

Since taking over, Ramraj has invested heavily in environmental conservation, coffee quality and the welfare of his (mostly female) workforce.

Meet Ramraj

El Ingenio

The Urrutias estate has been handed down through the generations since 1875, today the farm is run by 6th generation coffee farmers.

We've worked with this grower since 2016 and is a shining example of sustainable coffee farming.

The coffee from El Ingenio is shade-grown. This means the coffee grows below a canopy of trees in the forest rather than in fields. Farming this way allows the local ecosystems to thrive and biodiversity to flourish.

MEET RENE, GUSTAVO & Enrique

La Marianela

La Marianela is one of Extract's oldest coffee partnerships. We've worked with the Dorronsoro family since 2013.

The farm is run in careful balance with nature. Areas of the La Marianela farm are treated as a nature reserve and the farm is home to lots of native wildlife.

La Marinaela makes its own compost from discarded coffee cherries and recycles water to protect natural resources.

The Story of Extract Original Espresso

  1. INTRODUCING CAUVERY PEAK COFFEE FARM, INDIA

In 2021 we introduced an incredible Indian coffee from Cauvery Peak to the Extract Original house blend to join coffees from La Marianela in Colombia and a honey processed coffee from El Ingenio in El Salvador.

This UTZ certified farm is run by Ramraj Ramesh and has been in his family for more than 70 years. We visited Cauvery Peak in 2019 anfd saw first hand the investments Mr Ramesh has made in infrastructure and environmental care for decades you can read more about some of his environmental practices in our grower stories.

  2. Extract Original named Top 5 in UK

Extract Original is named one of the top 5 coffees in the UK the Lonely Planet Global Coffee Tour.

  3. INTRODUCING Sol Y Cafe, PERU

In 2017 we gave Original Espresso a shake up with a new partnership with Sol y Café, an organic cooperative of small-scale growers growing coffee high in the Peruvian mountains. The cooperative provides farmers with the practical support they need to improve coffee quality and crop yield. You can read more of their story here.

We topped this off with a hit of hazelnut in the form of the Guatemalan El Fogon, these two coffee growers joined our long standing Original staple, El Ingenio from El Salvador. Together the coffees produced a coffee with a big body of chocolate and subtle fruit notes.

  4. Welcoming El Ingenio

In 2016 we welcomed a new coffee grower to the Original House blend, a honey-processed El Salvadorian coffee from El Ingenio, a farm on the Urrutia family estate. Shade grown and organically fertilised, we loved this coffee so much it's still part of the Original Espresso blend today. Read more about the El Ingenio farm in our coffee grower stories.

  5. INTRODUCING LA MARIANELA, COLOMBIA

We kept the base of our 2014 coffee as the Yellow Bourbon coffee from Pantano in Brazil but added a relatively new coffee grower to the blend, the Colombian Marianela. Since 2014 La Marianela has become a long-lasting partnership which you can read more about in our grower stories.

  6. MILESTONE MOMENT: 1 tonne of coffee a week

Our Original espresso turned out to be a huge success. Thanks to our newly refurbished vintage roaster, Betty, (read her story here) in 2012 we hit a milestone moment of roasting 1000 kilos of coffee each week.

  7. ORIGINAL ESPRESSO IS BORN

After a few years of experimenting with roasting different coffees, in 2011, we created our first house-espresso. A signature coffee which would represent everything we stand for. Ethically sourced. Perfectly crafted. Great with milk and great without. A good coffee to all people.

So, whilst on a coffee-sourcing trip to Brazil, we found an exclusive lot of the Yellow Bourbon Pantano coffee, a coffee grower we still work with today. Packed full of caramel flavours, this made up the base of the very first version of Original Espresso.
