We’re Officially A Certified B Corporation®
This post has been written by Katharine, our Sustainability & Compliance Lead.
After a year and a half of hard work, reflection, and learning more about what we’re truly made of, I’m proud to say that Extract Coffee Roasters is now a Certified B Corporation®!
For me, this isn’t about earning a badge. It’s about being recognised by a respected third party for the work we’re doing behind the scenes, and our commitment to making coffee better, for people and the planet. Being part of the global B Corp community is an honour. But more importantly, it’s a promise. A promise to ourselves, our team, and our wider community, that we’re not just talking about values, we’re living them.
HOW WE GOT HERE
What makes this achievement so meaningful is how we got here. Everything we developed through this process had purpose. It promoted real change in how we think, how we operate, and how we support the people and systems around us. That’s what I’m most proud of.
One of the hardest parts of B Corp? Showing the working. A lot of what drives change happens behind the scenes, through conversations we’re having, the questions we ask each other and the way our internal mindset is evolving. For me and the senior leadership team, this will be an ongoing challenge to stay transparent and to bring all the stakeholders along for the ride.
WHERE WE STARTED, AND WHERE WE'RE GOING
From the beginning, we used the B Corp framework as a benchmark. We started at 50 points and finished at 84.4. That growth came from taking a hard look at what we were already doing, identifying the gaps, and improving in ways that aligned with our mission of making coffee better.
A key moment for us was running a materiality assessment and asking our stakeholders (and ourselves) what truly matters. The results highlighted the importance of employee wellbeing, supplier sustainability, and carbon reduction as priorities. From there, we built a plan, tracked progress, and regularly asked the tough question:
“How can we achieve this in a way that’s impactful and true to who we are?”
That question turned out to be one of the hardest parts of the process. But it pushed us beyond ticking boxes and helped shape improvements that genuinely matter to our business and our people.
THIS ISN'T JUST THE BEGINNING
Now that we’re certified, the real work begins.
This isn’t a finish line, it’s a new baseline. We’ve already started setting new targets, and we’re looking ahead to the updated B Corp standards, which will raise the bar even higher.
This is a journey of continuous improvement. We’re up for the challenge, we’re all in!
