SHOP ORIGINAL ESPRESSOMuch like whiskey, single origin coffees are prized in the coffee industry, but blends are often overlooked. This is partly because large chain coffee shops are known to use cheaper, poor-quality coffee in some of their blends. These coffees offer limited traceability back to the grower.
Original is a blend with a difference. Extract Original blends three carefully chosen coffees from fantastic coffee producers.
The result? A consistently delicious tasting espresso, ethically sourced, a favourite in homes, offices and cafes nationwide.
Our exclusive Brazilian blend delivers a rounded stone-fruit flavour. Think intense dried fruit and chocolate vibes, topped off with a super sweet, clean finish and a hint of raisin.
Tommy, our head roaster, has been working closely with the quality team in Brazil to hone in on what this perfect profile looks like. At each stage of the journey, from the buying station to the warehouse, samples are taken and meticulously evaluated to ensure they meet our exacting standards. Whether checking for defects or assessing the aroma and flavour profile, the quality team works hard to curate that perfect flavour.
A honey-processed lot from Cafe Tuxpal in El Salvador delivers a hit of jam-like sweetness. To curate the exact flavour we were after, we worked with the team to create a bespoke honey process, allowing the fermentation to add a complex sweet note.
Cafe Tuxpal is a collection of seven farms on the Santa Ana Volcano in the Apaneca Ilamatepec mountain range in El Salvador. The farms have been in the same family for six generations. Over 1000m above sea level, the Café Tuxpal farms sit in an unusual microclimate. Dry winters, warm summers and fertile, volcanic soils create the perfect growing conditions for a truly epic coffee.
To finish our Original blend, we wanted to add a bit of punch (and a touch of sparkle). The hunt for this took us to Kenya, known for fruity light-bodied coffees. Not just any Kenyan would do, however, we needed the right one; specifically the single estate Mchana in Kiambu County.
Here is where we found the perfect cup profile to finish the Original blend.
Kiambu County sits just next to Kenya’s capital city, Nairobi, and is a coffee powerhouse - home to Kenya’s largest coffee plantation, Mchana Estate. Once the cherries are picked they go through wet processing, where they are de-pulped, fermented and washed before drying in raised beds in the sun.

In 2021 we introduced an incredible Indian coffee from Cauvery Peak to the Extract Original house blend to join coffees from La Marianela in Colombia and a honey processed coffee from El Ingenio in El Salvador.
This UTZ-certified farm is run by Ramraj Ramesh and has been in his family for over 70 years. We visited Cauvery Peak in 2019 and saw firsthand the investments Mr Ramesh has made in infrastructure and environmental care for decades you can read more about some of his environmental practices in our grower stories.
Extract Original is named one of the top 5 coffees in the UK the Lonely Planet Global Coffee Tour.
In 2017 we gave Original Espresso a shake-up with a new partnership with Sol y Café, an organic cooperative of small-scale growers growing coffee high in the Peruvian mountains. The cooperative provides farmers with the practical support they need to improve coffee quality and crop yield. You can read more of their story here.
We topped this off with a hit of hazelnut in the form of the Guatemalan El Fogon, these two coffee growers joined our long-standing Original staple, El Ingenio from El Salvador. Together the coffees produced a coffee with a big body of chocolate and subtle fruit notes.
In 2016 we welcomed a new coffee grower to the Original House blend, a honey-processed El Salvadorian coffee from El Ingenio, a farm on the Urrutia family estate. Shade-grown and organically fertilised, we loved this coffee so much that it's still part of the Original Espresso blend today. Read more about the El Ingenio farm in our coffee grower stories.
We kept the base of our 2014 coffee as the Yellow Bourbon coffee from Pantano in Brazil, adding a relatively new coffee grower to the blend, the Colombian Marianela. Since 2014 La Marianela has become a long-lasting partnership which you can read more about in our grower stories.
Our Original espresso turned out to be a huge success. Thanks to our newly refurbished vintage roaster, Betty, (read her story here) in 2012 we hit a milestone moment of roasting 1000 kilos of coffee each week.
After a few years of experimenting with roasting different coffees, in 2011 we created our first house espresso. A signature coffee which would represent everything we stand for. Ethically sourced. Perfectly crafted. Great with milk and great without. A good coffee to all people.
So, whilst on a coffee-sourcing trip to Brazil, we found an exclusive lot of the Yellow Bourbon Pantano coffee, a coffee grower we still work with today. Packed full of caramel flavours, this made up the base of the very first version of Original Espresso.
Extract's Customer Coordinator, Jen, shares with us her love of coffee and the joy of sharing Extract Original Espresso with friends.
