Perched high up on the slopes of the active Turrialba volcano, this forward-thinking estate is Costa Rica’s largest farm, serving as a historic model for both environmental sustainability and social equity.
The story of Aquiares Estate began in the 1980s when Alfonso Robelo arrived in Costa Rica, seeking refuge from civil war in Nicaragua. Looking to build a secure future for both his family and his workers, Alfonso completely challenged the status quo. He transformed the estate into a thriving small town. Today, his son Diego manages the farm, pushing the boundaries of speciality coffee through incredible agricultural innovation.
Coffee thrives here. The nutrient-rich volcanic soil provides the perfect foundation for healthy crops, while the estate’s protected forest corridors ensure that local wildlife and lush natural flora & fauna thrive alongside the coffee trees. Aquiares is a verified carbon-neutral farm, actively measuring and offsetting its emissions to protect the beautiful landscape.
This particular coffee features the rare Esperanza varietal. An F1 hybrid cross between Sarchimor and a wild Ethiopian variety. This varietal is particularly difficult to grow, making Aquiares one of the only farms in the world to produce it on a commercial scale!
To really make this coffee shine, the beans have been through an intense African washed process. The beans are carefully washed before being placed on raised African beds inside a solar dryer for 18-24 days. This process allows for a wonderfully deep sweetness to be locked into the bean, ready for roasting and then brewing!
