We’ve landed at the birthplace of Indonesian coffee, Java Island. The island itself quickly became significant in the industry's history and growth, to the extent that the word ‘Java’ is now recognisable worldwide as a slang term for coffee.
Tell me more
Known for being home to nearly half of Indonesia's population, Java is the most populated island on earth, with busy cities nestled amongst a diverse volcanic landscape. In fact, you’ll find a total of 121 active volcanoes on the island. This means the soil is high in nutrients, allowing coffee to thrive and adding texture and depth to the end cup.
Within the Situbondo region of the island, you’ll find family-owned farms that form a membership called Koperasi Surya Abada Kayumas. With the high population, as you’d expect, each farmer owns an average of 2 hectares, approximately 1500 trees. The Kayumas Cooperative, where this espresso comes from, covers an area of nearly 400 hectares.
This cooperative is filled with an incredible amount of knowledge, which is fairly shared amongst colleagues. Due to the steep and remote volcanic land, there’s plenty to learn about irrigation systems, landslide prevention and planting distances between trees.
Explore the flavours of Indonesia with this espresso, and you can expect notes of Banana Bread & Chocolate Chips.
