People and Culture Lead

MAKE COFFEE BETTER

We’re looking for a practical, people-first HR/People professional to take ownership of the day-to-day delivery of People & Culture across the business. This is a hands-on, standalone role, ideal for someone who enjoys building structure, improving processes and supporting managers through the realities of working in a busy SME environment.

You’ll be close to the detail of day-to-day People & Culture delivery, helping make people processes clearer, fairer and more consistent while strengthening the systems and documentation that support good people management.

You’ll work closely with the Operations Director, Managing Director and wider leadership team to identify gaps, review guidance, draft practical recommendations and support people-related decisions, with final policy and strategic sign-off sitting with senior leadership.

You’ll need to balance empathy with structure, compliance with practicality, and people-first thinking with sound judgement.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

  • Lead the day-to-day delivery of People & Culture across the business
  • Act as the main operational point of contact for people matters, supporting both managers and employees
  • Support managers with people processes, helping them apply policies fairly, consistently and confidently
  • Provide practical guidance on employee relations, including absence, performance, conduct and workplace concerns
  • Review, update and improve HR policies and processes in line with UK employment law, ACAS guidance and best practice
  • Maintain accurate HR records, employee documentation and system data keeping everything clear, compliant and audit-ready
  • Coordinate and communicate People-related payroll inputs to payroll
  • Support recruitment and onboarding processes, helping ensure a fair, consistent and well-organised candidate and new starter experience
  • Identify gaps, risks or inefficiencies in current people processes and create practical improvements
  • Develop guidance, templates and training for managers and employees
  • Contribute to wider business projects where people, structure, process or change is involved
  • Help embed Extract’s values into everyday people practices, communication and decision-making
  • Who you are

  • You’ll be an experienced HR / People generalist who enjoys operational delivery and is confident working independently
  • You’ll be comfortable moving between detail and judgement: checking documentation one moment, advising a manager the next, then improving a process so the same issue is easier to handle in future
  • You’ll bring a calm, practical and values-led approach. You don’t need a huge corporate HR background, but you do need solid HR knowledge, strong organisation and the confidence to guide managers clearly and fairly
  • What we're looking for

  • Strong generalist HR experience, ideally in an SME, operational or multi-team environment
  • Good working knowledge of UK employment law, ACAS guidance and practical HR application
  • Experience supporting employee relations matters with appropriate judgement and escalation
  • Confidence advising and coaching managers on people processes
  • Experience maintaining HR systems, records, contracts and employee documentation
  • Clear, confident written and verbal communication
  • A people-first but commercially practical approach
  • Bonus if you have

  • Degree in Human Resource Management, CIPD Level 5 or equivalent experience
  • Experience in manufacturing, food production, hospitality, retail, FMCG or another operational SME environment
  • Experience supporting audits or compliance frameworks
  • Experience developing HR templates, guidance materials, workshops or manager training
  • Why join us?

  • Salary £35,000–£40,000 depending on experience
  • 37.5 hour week, Monday to Friday
  • 31 days’ holiday, including bank holidays
  • Additional Sick Pay and Parental Pay
  • Free coffee for home
  • Employee Assistance Programme
  • Cycle to Work scheme
  • Paid volunteering time
  • On-site parking
  • Training and development opportunities
  • Team events and a values-led workplace culture

  • Equity, Diversity & Inclusion

We actively support diversity and inclusion and ensure that all our employees are valued and treated with dignity and respect. We want to encourage everyone in our business to reach their potential.

We work to ensure no job applicant, employee or worker is discriminated against either directly or indirectly on the grounds of age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy or maternity, race, religion or belief, sex or sexual orientation.
