Cast Iron coffee

IN THE CUP: BLACK CHERRY, COCOA

DARK ROAST COFFEE

Cast Iron is one of our longest standing farmer partnerships. A single-estate coffee from the same Rainforest Alliance Guatemalan farm, Monte Rosa, since 2015.

Cast Iron is also our darkest-roast coffee, roasted on Bertha, our 120kg vintage Probat roaster.

The longer roasting time extends the caramelisation of the coffee bean's natural sugars, making Cast Iron a punchy espresso which is consistent, shot after shot.

COFFEE DESIGNED FOR MILK AND ALT-MILKS

We created Cast Iron as a coffee to be paired with milk. To balance out the sweetness and creaminess of milky coffees like lattes and cappcuccinos.

Lower acidity in this coffee also means that it’s a perfect coffee for alternative milks like oat milk or almond milk. A longer roast time means the flavour of the coffee cuts through the sweetness of alt-milks to make an epic oat milk latte or almond flat white.

The Story behind Cast Iron

  1. GROUNDWORKS WITH DOCKS BEERS

Cast Iron emerges as the craft brewers coffee of choice. In our second coffee-beer co-lab of the year, Cast Iron was chosen by Grimsby's Docks Beers, for their espresso and tonka bean stout. Groundworks is a rich and creamy stout with the bitterness of Cast Iron balanced out by the sweetness of the tonka beans and creaminess of oats.

  2. IMPERIAL COFFEE PORTER WITH FIERCE & NOBLE

At the start of 2021 Bristol craft brewers, Fierce & Noble released a punchy Imperial Coffee Porter brewed using Cast Iron. This is our third coffee-beer colab with Fierce and Noble but the first coffee porter. This was a punchy brew (9%!) with rich roasty flavours and a caramel sweetness.

  3. CAST IRON FOR NHS KEYWORKERS

When lockdown hit, Extract Coffee Roasters started donating coffee to NHS keyworkers to fuel the front line. Throughout 2020 we donated around 40,000 cups of coffee to the NHS - a signficant amount being our hard-graft coffee of choice, Cast Iron.

  4. Cast Iron Coffee Stout with Fierce and Noble

2019 saw the launch of our first coffee stout with Bristol craft brewers, Fierce and Noble. The Cast Iron Coffee Stout was a smooth and creamy stout with lots of malty notes and a strong coffee flavour. The original co-lab was so popular we repeated it again in 2020.

  5. A FRESH NEW LOOK

Cast Iron proved hugely successful and within three years had become one of our top three selling coffees.

In 2018 we updated the label and packaging to pay tribute to the hard graft that went into building and restoring our vintage probat roasters Betty and Bertha.

  6. Introducing Cast Iron Espresso

In 2015 we decided to create a new coffee. A darker-roast espresso designed to be paired with milk and a homage to the restoration of our cast-iron 1950s roaster. Cast Iron Espresso was born.

We chose coffee from a rainforest alliance certified farm in Guatemala, Monte Rosa, part of the wider Nueva Granada Estate. The estate has planted some 30,000 new trees since becoming certified and is home to protected wildlife specied and waterways.

Social responsibility is also high up on the agenda, the estate provides education and healthcare to its residents and access to clean drinking water to the local community.
