EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW
Inner Strength, our limited edition Winter espresso, has returned! This year, it features coffee from the Iyenga village in southern Tanzania. This inspiring coffee-growing community are renowned for producing some of the country’s most highly regarded crops.
Grown above 1,600 metres above sea level in the high-altitude district of Mbozi, this coffee benefits from rich agricultural land and ideal growing conditions.
This year, it’s bursting with damson jam, blackberry and date when enjoyed without milk. Or drink with milk, and you’ll sip a slice of delicious mix of shortbread and molasses, perfect for those slower winter mornings.
This particular lot is produced by the Iyenga Agricultural Marketing Cooperative society (AMCOS), a community-led initiative formed in 2003, which now supports nearly 300 local farmers.
During harvest, the ripe coffee cherries are handpicked and delivered to local processing sites, where they are sorted in flotation tanks to remove any underripe fruit, before being passed through an eco-pulper. After a final wash and grading, the beans are then left to dry slowly on traditional raised African beds under shade for 9-10 days to allow more complex flavours to develop.
The care taken by Iyenga AMCOS is second to none, so much so that their coffees recently took 2nd and 3rd place at the Tanzania Fine Coffees Competition!
Working with Mercanta gives us access to this exceptional coffee, allowing us to support Iyenga AMCOS to access the international coffee markets, as well as supporting essential building work like their new kindergarten school for children of the community.
