Earlier this year we took a trip out to El Salvador to track down this season’s Dr Strangelove Espresso. The journey took us to Santa Ana, in western El Salvador, close to the Guatemalan border. Here, Finca San Carlos uses organic farming methods to ensure that the coffee on the farm not only has the best possible growing conditions, but that the surrounding environment is also well cared for.
The location of the farm is lush and diverse, with a unique micro-climate that keeps the coffee trees shaded and cool with plenty of reliable rainfall. Leaf litter is left to accumulate to preserve ground moisture, promote soil health and aid nutrient absorption.
A few months following our trip, the coffee arrived at the roastery for further taste tests and roasting trials – and we couldn’t be happier with this season’s change. It has a great balance of acidity, sweetness and body with a subtle almond nuttiness, sticky red fruits and cocoa. It is both accessible and adventurous, and the combination of vibrant fruit flavour and bold sweetness makes this coffee an easy leap into the realms of truly exciting and unusual single origin coffees.
