Iced coffee for hot days. 3 delicious recipes

Iced coffee for hot days. 3 delicious recipes

We've been brewing up our own delicious iced coffee recipes to welcome in the warmer days. Iced coffees are surprisingly easy to make (they're also faster and less faff than cold-brew coffee.)

In this blog post we share four iced coffee recipes which can be easily made at home. Iced latte, dark chocolate iced mocha, white chocolate iced mocha and the Extract Coffee Roasters team favourite, a coffee tonic.

Choosing the right coffee for iced coffee drinks.

The recipes in this particular blog post work best with medium roast coffees (or  espresso roast coffees). The longer roast time for these coffees means they're darker, with more body and a stronger flavour which can stand up to the addition of milk. Take a look at our coffee-chooser tool in the shop for more recommendations on the best coffees to drink with milk or coffees to drink with alternative milks.

Some extra tips for choosing a coffee for an iced coffee drink is to look at the flavour notes or "In the Cup" suggestions. Look for coffees with plenty of sweetness in their flavour profile, things like notes of sugar, toffee, and caramel and butterscotch.

Strong fruit notes will give your iced drink that nice summery taste. Think stone fruits, citrus and tropical fruits and purple berries. The sweetness and acidity of these coffees will translate into a delicious iced drink. For this reason, we think  natural process coffees and honey process coffees are particularly good for iced drinks, thanks to their fruity flavours so these are a great place to start.

For each recipe below, we suggest some styles of coffee which could work particularly well with that drink. These are suggestions only. You can use any espresso coffee for these recipes - and the fun part is experimenting to make the recipes your own!

Recipe: How to make an iced latte at home

A classic iced latte is super easy to make. When choosing a coffee we recommend a medium roast coffee ( check out our selection of espressos here).

Choose a  sweet tasting coffee or an espresso with strong fruit notes in the flavour profile.

Ingredients you need for an iced latte at home

  • 200ml fresh cold milk or an alternative milk of your choice.
  • 1 double shot of coffee (36ml)
  • Ice

Equipment you need to make iced lattes at home

  • A glass
  • Something to make an espresso style drink. An espresso machine is best but if you don't have one you can use an aeropress or a mocha pot.

Method: How to make an iced latte at home

  • First of all, make a double shot of espresso.
  • If you're using an espresso machine we recommend a brew ratio of 18g of coffee in for 36ml coffee our and a shot of time of 25 to 30 seconds.
  • More advice on finding the perfect brew ratio for your coffee in our Golden Rules Brew Guide: 6 ways to make your coffee taste better at home and in our Espresso Brew Guide.
  • If you don't have an espresso machine at home you can use a mocha pot or an aeropress using the classic method (More details in our free Aeropress brew guide here
  • Fill your glass with ice, then add your milk.
  • Finally, top with espresso. It might take a few tries to achieve that instagram-worthy marbling of the coffee and milk (but however it looks, it should taste great!)

Recipe: How to make dark chocolate and white chocolate iced mocha

The ingredients and method for an iced mocha are very similar to an iced latte. The only addition is dark hot chocolate or white hot chocolate.

The addition of chocolate brings an added sweetness to your iced coffee. To keep it balanced we recommend an  espresso roast coffee

If you're looking for a dark chocolate mocha, try something with big chocolatey notes and lots of body like  Extract Organic Espresso or Extract Original Espresso. If you'd like to try a white chocolate iced mocha, we recommend giving our Betty Espresso a try.

Recipe: How to make an iced coffee tonic
