More about Original
Papua New Guinea (PNG) is not to be underestimated. This island state is doing an incredible job with coffee, producing some distinctive high-quality coffees.
Grown high in limestone-rich soils on the mountain slopes and deep in the rainforest, this coffee has a high cup quality with a super tasty profile of classic chocolatey notes and distinct butterscotch sweetness.
The vast majority of coffee in PNG is grown by smallholder farmers, deep in the rainforest, in communities so remote that many are only accessible by foot or plane! Every family member has a role to play to help maintain the small ‘coffee gardens’, often with 100 trees per household. Every harvest has the potential to not only support an individual family but also an entire community.

Our Direct Impact
Working alongside our long standing partners, Volcafe, allows us to focus on quality, transparency and building long term relationships with coffee growing communities at origin.
As the country’s longest serving exporter (PNG Coffee Exports Ltd), Volcafe operates its own dedicated wet and dry mills. This unique setup allows even more control over quality, experimenting with innovation processing techniques while also keeping the coffee safe in the cool, low-humidity highlands until the exact moment it’s ready to ship.
Through Volcafe’s sustainability initiatives with the Volcafe Way, our coffee purchases directly support regional projects that include:
- 15,000 smallholders are trained through the PNGAuz Econnomic Partnership in Good Agricultural Practices (GAP). This equips them with the skills to cultivate shade tree nurseries and carry out rigorous deforestation mapping, allowing the coffee to grow without destroying the surrounding rainforest.
- Investment into infrastructure, from ecopulpers at the wet mills to high-tech optical sorting at the dry mill ensures quality control of the highest standard.
- Supporting farmers to move away from low value commercial coffee into higher margin speciality markets by supporting certification practices.
- Over 40,000 children provided with clean drinking water solutions including the local schools, significantly reducing water-borne illnesses and keeping children in school.
Through our relationship with Volcafe and our focus on direct impact we’re able to support and grow relationships within our supply chain to continue to Make Coffee Better.

Meet the Roasters
Extract Original is always roasted on Bertha, a 120kg Probat coffee roaster which we rescued from Bosnia and lovingly rebuilt over a period of 4 years.
When we found Bertha she was a pile of rusting parts on the ground. With no inventory (and significant language barriers!) we decided to take a risk and go for it!
Over the next four years we slowly rebuilt the machine which is now the heartbeat of roastery life today. An afterburner was added to eliminate VOCs from our emissions (that's cleaner air for our community). Parts were replaced and the machine itself now runs 60% more efficiently than when originally built 30 years ago.
