A little bit about the history of coffee in Rwanda
Before the creation of central washing stations such as Ruli, the norm in Rwanda was for small farmers to sell coffee cherries to middlemen, meaning the market was dominated by a single exporter. Combining this with the devastating effects of the genocide in the 1990s, coffee was an extremely tough industry to be in, creating severe hardship for the farmers involved.
Today, thanks to cooperatives like Musasa Dukunde Kawa, Rwandan coffee has been propelled into the speciality market. Shifting the focus away from quantity and towards quality; a crucial shift in revitalising the industry.
The future is bright
Nestled in the rugged northwest of Rwanda is the Musasa Dukunde Kawa Cooperative, one of Rwanda’s highest washing stations.
The cooperative gives small farmers the chance to combine their harvests and process cherries centrally. As well as this, it has an outstanding social programme, providing school fees, medical insurance and training for families involved.
This particular filter coffee is a product of the women’s group, made up of 50 women producers, many of whom are widows from the genocide. Their coffee cherries are hand-picked at peak ripeness before undergoing meticulous processing and careful drying on raised beds.
This Red Bourbon varietal offers a dark fruit sweetness with sparkling acidity. With flavours of damson jam, cranberry juice & cane sugar, you don’t want to miss out on this one.
How to brew
We love using a V60 for this particular filter coffee. Brew with a ratio of 32g of coffee per 500ml of water to let the flavours sing.
