In the shadows of the mighty Mt Kenya, Kathangariri has developed a reputation for producing some of the best quality coffees in Kenya. This bright, interesting filter coffee celebrates everything we love about washed Kenyan coffees, we hope you enjoy it as much as we do!

More about Kathangariri

This particular community lot is from the Muramuki Farmers Cooperative in Embu County.

Kenya’s processing techniques are world-class. After harvesting, the ripe cherries are brought to the washing station which is where the coffee is sorted, pulped and washed before being dried on raised beds.

The resulting coffee has bright honey sweetness and redcurrant acidity with an almost tea-like complexity. If washed Kenyan filter coffees are your thing, this is one you’re going to love.

Why we love Kathangariri

Like many farmers in Kenya, the growers contributing to this coffee are smallholders producing only small amounts of (incredible quality) coffee. Community washing stations and cooperatives like Muramuki are vital for farmers to access bigger export markets and sell their coffee.

How to brew Kathangariri Filter

For a washed Kenyan coffee like Kathangariri we like to opt for pour over method like a V60 which really accentuate the coffee's clean characteristics and bright fruit notes.

Using a V60, grind 30g coffee on a medium grind. Pour over 100ml of hot filtered water and allow the coffee to "bloom" for 30 seconds. Slowly pour an additional 400ml of hot, filtered water in a controlled, circular motion, ideally using a coffee kettle. You're aiming for a total brew time of 4 minutes.
